Synap integrates with Blackboard using IMS LTI standards, supporting both LTI 1.1 and LTI 1.3. The integration allows institutions to securely connect Blackboard courses with Synap assessments, learning content, learner launch workflows, proctoring, and grade return.

Instructors can add Synap content to Blackboard using content selection workflows. Depending on the Blackboard setup, this may use LTI 1.3 Deep Linking or LTI 1.1 Content Item Selection. From Blackboard, instructors launch Synap’s content picker, choose an exam or supported quiz activity, and Synap returns a Blackboard-compatible resource link for placement inside the course.

When learners open a Synap link from Blackboard, Blackboard launches Synap through the configured LTI version. Synap validates the launch, authenticates or provisions the learner, maps their Blackboard role to the appropriate Synap role, and redirects them directly into the relevant Synap assessment or activity. Learners do not need to manually sign in to Synap when launching from Blackboard.

Synap supports direct launches into exams and supported quiz collection items. For each learner, Synap creates a relevant exam or quiz attempt, previous activity results or if configured, issues resits.

Where enabled, Synap proctoring can be used as part of the assessment workflow. Proctored attempt status and outcomes can be reflected in downstream reporting and grade return workflows where supported by the Blackboard configuration.

Where grade return is configured, Synap can send learner progress and assessment outcomes back to Blackboard. LTI 1.3 launches can use Assignment and Grade Services, while LTI 1.1 launches can use the configured outcomes service, helping Blackboard gradebook records stay aligned with assessment activity completed in Synap.

The integration is designed to support both modern LTI 1.3 deployments and existing LTI 1.1 Blackboard workflows, giving institutions a standards-based way to deliver Synap assessments from within Blackboard.
